A daisy-family perennial that waits for the days to shorten before it blooms, which is why it arrives with the fall. Gardeners in China have been growing it for thousands of years.

Meaning

It changes with the map. In Japan the chrysanthemum is the emperor’s emblem; across much of Europe it is the flower laid on graves in November; here it mostly means the leaves are turning.
